Not Enough Experience for Tech Job & Consulting Company SCAMS!
This blog covers several aspects of the software development industry and offers insights into them.
Imposter Syndrome
Imposter syndrome occurs when people working in an environment assume everyone knows everything, but in reality, it isn’t the same when working on a large application.
In reality, there are very few people who know exactly what is happening with the entire application, so it is impossible to know everything in a large team trying to develop software. All developers don’t need to be familiar with the entire code base, but each developer should be familiar with the areas of their responsibilities.
The majority of companies assign freshers a project within two weeks of joining. Unfortunately, most of them don’t know how the application works.
During the training period, companies usually provide a theoretical overview and a bit of hands-on experience with various technologies so that you can better understand how they work.
In other words, beginners often struggle with their projects at first, but I promise you that as soon as you start progressing even in the smallest way, learning something new about your project will help you to make sense of it even better.
It’s therefore important to practice and be consistent. My last tip for beginners is to avoid staying in your comfort zone and instead interact with your seniors or co-workers, as they would have already gained the experience necessary to help you understand.
Scams associated with consulting companies
Now let’s talk about the scams that happen in the tech space. For example, several clients are large companies seeking to fill positions. The organization might hire a consulting firm to find the candidate for them, but the firm might not have that resource readily available. Instead, the organization will hire a small firm to handle the hiring process on its behalf.
Those small consulting companies don’t do this hiring process, which is why they aren’t able to find suitable candidates; rather, they are only able to see the quick and smart learners from their team. These people are trained enough to just pass the interview process and go straight to work for the contract organization once they have passed.
In such scenarios, there is a high chance of falling victim to this type of scam, so be on the lookout for it while applying. Although you have one year of experience, don’t hesitate to apply for a two-year experience role because, ultimately, it is your skills and expertise in that subject area that will guide you to your dream job.
The situation is even worse when scammers take advantage of the interview process while the consulting company controls the interview environment and video quality, where in some cases, the video sync happens, whereas audio is coming from a different source, which may help them pass the interview round, where some random employee of the consultancy company will speak on behalf of the individual being interviewed.
As a result of these scams conducted by consultancy companies, the person who is best suited for the role does not even get a chance to apply, instead, some random person with zero or low expertise gets into the role with ease.
It’s important to remember that they may pass this test easily at first, but without technical skills and expertise, they cannot survive in the software industry.
T-Shaped Developer
Finally, I want to talk about something known as a “T-Shaped developer”. Now, this is a very good practice that might be useful in software development industries, where you could perform even better in your areas of work.
Let’s first understand who is a “T-shaped developer”. T-shaped developers are people who are experts in their fields, where that expertise represents the vertical bar of a T.
Additionally, that person has general knowledge of other fields which is symbolized by the horizontal bar of T, using which they can work with other developers and team members to accomplish a common goal.
So how is this even useful in software development industries? Well, the simple answer to this question is, you will gain the ability to view things from another’s point of view and improve your communication skills, which will assist you in more effectively conveying the pros and cons of various implementation approaches by other professionals you will work with.
The second benefit of becoming a T-shaped developer is that it will help you think critically, master problem-solving, and make better decisions, which is also the core part of software development practices. When it comes to daily tasks, T-shaped developers are more efficient, fulfilling tasks in less time, at lower risks, and with fewer bottlenecks. Developers need to think outside the box and be curious about other areas of technology.
The ability to work alongside people from different domains gives developers a different perspective on problem-solving. A team approach speeds up problem-solving and identifies potential issues early on. Hence developing yourself as a T-shaped developer can take you to more reliable positions in the software development industry.
